Intro to
Biology
Grades 2-4 $155 October 12 - 16 2:30 - 4:30 |
Let's explore biology by looking at the animal kingdom! We will study vertebrates and invertebrates while discussing principles in biology, that range from ecosystems to organ systems. Dissections of various specimens will be used to illustrate concepts.

MICROSCOPY: Biology Close Up
Grades 7-8 / 9:00 - 11:00 Grades 5-6 / 12:00 - 2:00 |
This is a 5-workshop series in zoology and taxonomy. Students will learn the classification system of biology (taxonomy) by studying the Animal Kingdom. Workshops will include dissections of five specimens representative of different categories of the Animal Kingdom. Each workshop will include a lecture period, class discussion/activity and dissection.

Intro to CHEMISTRY!!!
Grades 7 - 8 $155 October 12 -16 9:00 - 11:00 |
Consider this week-long lab as a stepping stone to high school chemistry, or simply as an introduction to fundamental chemistry concepts encountered in daily life. Through experimentation students will learn the basics of chemical reactions, bonds, nomenclature, atomic and molecular properties. Chemistry is a subject that can baffle and frustrate. This lab provides explanation of concepts and ... aims to provide the keys to enlightenment of this subject for future science classes, or simply appreciation and comprehension of everyday topics. |

High School Labs: These two-semester length courses are intended to provide experience to expand the student’s knowledge of biology/chemistry concepts. Utilizing hands-on lab experiments and visuals, the labs are designed to reinforce concurrent independent study in a chemistry/biology text book*, as well as provide a foundation for continuing science-related courses. Progress will be assessed by homework assignments, quizzes and in-class reviews. Students will receive a syllabus and home-work assignments, in order that they may come to each lab with a basic understanding of the topic. Format will include a short time of instruction/discussion followed by a lab period. Registration for the spring semester will open in November; students are not obligated to register for the second semester.

Teaching Science in the Home
For all ages of parents

Bring your coffee and spend a Saturday morning getting ideas that will that help you teach science at your kitchen table. Come listen to the experiences and techniques of someone who has been a home school student and is now a teacher. As a home school graduate and now with seven years of teaching experience in the home school community, Lisa Long has a unique perspective of home education from both sides of the desk - as a teacher and student. Lisa believes that experiments and demonstrations are the best way to illustrate an idea, so she invites you to participate in a morning of science projects while she shares ideas, techniques and other tips from her journey as a home school student and teacher. With experience teaching labs for elementary grades through high school, Lisa Long has suggestions about what skills to address at various grade levels and also the skills that should be priorities for college-bound high school students. As a biology graduate of UAA, Lisa can tell you what is important for the transition from home school to college. While providing examples of how to teach science with common household items, this workshop is intended to encourage you and build confidence in your ability to teach science in the home.
