| Here's
a workshop that emphasizes the best part of science . . . the
EXPERIMENTS! Science is not just what you read in a book, it's what you see taking place in front of you, that makes the text come alive. This workshop includes a smattering of hands-on experiments and demonstrations that illustrate scientific principles. In this class, our attitude is "the bigger the mess, the better". This week will be so much fun that students won't notice that it's educational. See below for payment and location. |

Intro
to Biology |
Let's
take a tour of fundamentals of biology, with experimentation
and
dissection. This smorgasbord of biology will include the
study of
cells, organs and systems of all the kingdoms. By comparing the
diversity
and similarities of organisms and their structures, students will
develop
an elementary concept of the complex organization of biology. See below for payment and location. |

Microscopy:
Biology Close Up
|
Join
us in this workshop as we
examine biology from a different angle. . . through a microscope. While
classes in microbiology often focus primarily on bacteria and protista,
this
lab will include the exploration the minute details of multi-cellular
organisms that are invisible to the naked eye. Students will
have the opportunity to observe the microscopic structures of
biology that play a part in the big picture of biology. This workshop will
include
the use of high quality microscopes, preparation of slides, and a
history tour
of the microscope and its impact on science. In order to offer personal
instruction
and use of equipment,
this class size is limited to 10 students.
Registration is on
a first come, first served basis. |

Critter Class
II: VERTEBRATES
April 12 - 16 |
This workshop
is a sequel to Critter Class I,
offered last semester. In this continuing study of zoology we
will take a more detailed look at the complexity of vertebrates and the
classification system. This five-day study, which includes snake and
shark dissections,
has become students' favorite workshop. Each workshop will
consist of a lecture period, class discussion/activity, and dissection.
In order to accommodate two grade ranges, two sections of this workshop
will be offered. No prerequisites or prior science studies
required. |

High
School Chemistry II
$255 Student provides their own lab coat Prerequisite: Algebra I. This is a
highly math-based course; not recommended for freshmen. Microchem Kit:
www.hometrainingscience.com or www.qualityscience.com |
High School Labs: These two-semester length courses are intended to provide experience to expand the students knowledge of biology/chemistry concepts. Utilizing hands-on lab experiments and visuals, the labs are designed to reinforce concurrent independent study in a chemistry/biology text book*, as well as provide a foundation for continuing science-related courses. Progress will be assessed by homework assignments, quizzes and in-class reviews. Students will receive a syllabus and home-work assignments, in order that they may come to each lab with a basic understanding of the topic. Format will include a short time of instruction/discussion followed by a lab period. Registration for the spring semester will open in November; students are not obligated to register for the second semester.
*Contact instructor for text recommendations.
